In a lot of ways, what follows is the true essence of what makes a Substack newsletter: Writers, without editors, yammering on, regardless of word count, about something potentially only they care about. Unbound by staunch parameters! For better or worse.
And so this is where we find ourselves today: Toolboxes. Nice-looking ones. Let’s dive in.
Yes, you can carry your tools in almost anything. Old plastic bag; cradled in the your crook of your arm; in one of the 500 reusable totes you have been given against your own will. There are low fi options.
There are also overly chic and self referential options, which make one embarrassed to even be here, discussing the category.
The selections that follow are somewhere in between, mostly sourced from actual hardware stores and suppliers, but also from plenty of designeries, as well. Do you need your toolbox to be nice-looking? Absolutely not. But, if you are at all like me, you’ll find an inordinate amount of joy from sliding your prized and adorable red enamel box off the shelf before hopping into action.

Exceptional photographer and friend of Treehouse, David Kitz worked on a photo story for the print zine. He sent me finals yesterday and they are STELLAR. Talent is a part of it, sure, but the backdrop, this vintage Mercedes David rented for the shoot, doesn’t hurt either. Everything is exciting!
