A long and convoluted story, but five years ago, an unlikely (for me) thing happened and I became a Waldorf mom. There’s a longer conversation to be had about Steiner (probably not here because: irrelevant to what we do in this publication), however, I’ve found the American interpretation and particularly the one at our school to be pretty fantastic. Of course, like every person who’s touched this particular space, I love the celebrations, mostly because they make you stop and notice and demarcate what’s happening around you. A beloved one (again, for me) is today, Candlemas, February 2nd—also known as Groundhog Day, Imbolc, and Early Spring (立春) in Traditional Chinese Medicine (the latter two fall on 2/1). It sits between solstice and equinox and ALSO happens to be exactly the best winter weather, consistently. I call it “blue on top, white on the bottom.” Days are crystal clear, EXTREMELY COLD, and beautiful and snowy. The light is noticeably different and it’s just a really nice marker of the time passing and the lighter days really, really returning. So today it’s Click On This: Candlemas Edition! 🕯️ Don’t forget to cross your midline today, y’all!
I’ve had these candle-sculptures bookmarked for a long time, just waiting for the right time to unleash them and this seems like The Moment. Artist Janie Korn has many special candles on offer, all of which beg the excruciating question, But how could you actually stand to burn this? To push it even further, Korn will make a wax candle portrait—or custom house or pet candle—which begs the question even more! And, for the record, if anyone ever asks or wants to know what is my aesthetic, this is exactly it.
I first wandered over to London-based Wax Atelier because of the absolutely adorable and candlestick holder-defying Stubby Candle (pictured above). But, I’m now absolutely captivated by their wax linen flowers. Non-burnable, but man—what a stunning way to engage with a fake flower (below).
Better get an empty Chianti bottle ready because these tapers were made with the express purpose of being incredibly drippy. Many colors available, but the multicolored is my pick.
