On Thursday, I tried to say some comforting things to a friend about the State of Things in the States and, well, I actually really couldn’t. Things are pretty terrifying and the unknown and what next of it all makes it even worse. I still don’t have anything comforting to say, but there are a few things I know to be worthwhile: First and foremost, trust your eyes and ears, OK? (here’s the quote; here’s the unabridged quote). Second and related, those in power have a vested interest in keeping or making us stupider [insert my personal AI paranoia here]. So: let’s be educated. If we haven’t already, let’s learn about The Imperial Boomerang, The Monroe Doctrine, flexible realism, and everything else we can (add to comments!). (As an aside, I am actively buying books for my kids I think could potentially be harder to come by—started here—leave other ideas below!!) And finally, at least for right now: focusing on art and community works. People are hurting—here, on the ground—and if you are able to help, now is the time. Meanwhile, I feel confident that art (in all forms, I’m including late night résistance here too!) is the salve and the salvation. There is power in crying, laughing, making things—it means we haven’t given up.
One-upping the success of Cheap Old Houses, here comes an IG called Old Houses Under $100k. Which is great even if you aren’t looking to create a bunker and wait the whole thing out. }LINK{
I went to Italy (!) with my best bud (late breaking, now on Substack!!!), took a lil break from gluten abstinence, and wow did I feel like garbage! Luckily, said bud subscribes to these Terracotta Farmacia seasonal tincture-and-unguent boxes. She happened to have some digestive bitters on hand that bounced me back in no time at all. (Plus, how can you not love an herbalist who does a deep dive analysis of Lila Cerullo!) }LINK{
My heart belongs to Ojai Pixies, but the weeks between now and March, when they are ripe and shipping, feel like an age! So! I was very happy to have the Mandarin Man pass through my line of sight, with Kishus shipping NOW. A needed break from putrid Peelz au Hannaford. }LINK{
Really had to stop myself from reposting the whole damn carousel on this one… }LINK{
