The Source: American Floor Mats
Wherein I divulge my most-favorite online source for rugs and mats. A love-letter of sorts.
Today we’re adding to our fledgling Source section here at Treehouse, with the addition of American Floor Mats. If you know me in real life, I have very likely spoken to you about AFM because, reader, I am smitten.
This love story began three years ago, when we first moved into our house. As you know, I am a big fan of concrete, however as flooring, it quickly showed its true nature as an absolute demon for knees, backs, calves, ankles. Plainly: standing around on solid rock will hurt your body.
Who knew, but, as a category, anti-fatigue mats tend to be relentlessly suburban. Some have this kind of circa 2006 Blogspot pattern thing going on; the sort of “on trend” option I found to be a ~bit much~; and then there’s Uline, which is, generally speaking, a scary place to hang out, ethics-wise.
But lo! American Floor Mats! Riding in on a white stallion of mat relief; my hero. I went for this marblized surface option in black; I might mess around with the pyramid texture if given another shot. And! You can choose your dimensions and thickness—they are Made. To. Order. My heart!
Does it stop there?
(Please, I *will* get to 1000 words about American Floor Mats, so help me.)
No, it absolutely does not stop there. Mud season arrived and our entry zone/mud room became utterly foul, plus, the rug that was there wasn’t really preventing all that mud and debris from coming into the rest of the house. I went to see what my sweetheart, American Floor Mats, had to offer and got myself a truly gigantic coco fiber entry mat. Once again, customizable by size, pile depth, and color; they cut it how you want it and send it your way.
There are treasures in here, folks. Not a total dupe, but I found this oversized braided entry mat that looks a hell of a lot like the one I covet from Nickey Keyhoe. This one also rules, so does this one. I have definitely seen these in design stores.
My brain gets a wild creative jolt clicking around here. What if you were laying new flooring and added a recessed entry mat as if you were GD supermarket? Could you or a talented friend create an illustration to print on these logo mats? Does another fun use of this social distancing mat exist? What can we do with these squishy, be-speckled gym rolls? Should we add the marblized pattern to the stair risers probably?
If anything, I have to thank American Floor Mats. For their products, sure, but really for unlocking a passion for floor mats I did not know I previously possessed.
Reader, click around and tell me what fun finds (and uses) your see on this treasure map (website). And leave a comment!
Note
No listings this week because I am *away* and I wrote this *in the past* and any listings I would have found would now be *irrelevant.*
Past me, writing this currently, has high hopes to work on June layouts and copy from the plane (we’ll see how deeply future-current me rolls her eyes at this plan). Any new subscriptions that come through this week: I will mail your May issue when I return the second week of June.
Zinzi... how is it possible that TWICE now in a very short span of time that you have brought to me my saving grace... this time in the form of floor mats. My entryway has been ravaged by my dog, who insists on running in AND out like a hound from hell covered in mud or grass or bugs. This newsletter was a BLESSING.
I was trying to figure out why it looked familiar when I realized I have been on this site myself quite recently! We were looking for rolled rubber flooring for the outdoor shed we've been converting into a gym space. We ending up going with a cheaper, local option, but go look at the 95% fill rolled rubber flooring--the brown one looks like cork! The red is reminiscent of terrazzo! Truly some hidden gems that you highlighted.
