On Pinterest, algorithms, and new and different places to add pizzazz
There is only one word to adequately describe what's coming and "pizzazz" is it.
It’s probably a pretty bad idea to “go on record” about almost anything and most especially when it’s a strong opinion about something utterly inconsequential and mundane. But, here we are. In the past, I have mentioned a habit of being overprotective of my Spotify account—concerned the “wrong” listen would signal the wrong thing to the cruel algorithm only to have it churn more and worse suggestions. Truly, can we imagine a worse nightmare. In fact, my friend who is now midway through a masters in media studies tells me this is a common anxiety among us professionalized content consumers.
Anyway, it turns out a tightly curated Spotify only shuttles you towards ultimate sameness with every other person; nothing particularly special, tailored, or much related to you. So: I no longer endorse maintaining your algorithmic point of view on that platform. No, I’ve got a new algo for you to maintain and it’s on Pinterest.
Yes, Pinterest! Remember Pinterest? Where all the calligraphy and the mom stuff and the bullet journal ideas hang out? As it turns out, Pinterest has a whole lot more and weirder and fun things to offer as well. And, so far as I can tell, it’s actually quite good at knowing what the next thing you may want to see will be. The most recent print edition of Treehouse included colorful tissue paper shadow puppets and the idea came to me because of some images I saw on Pinterest.
If you’re wondering where the lede is, it’s coming.
Pinterest also introduced me to something that, as previous wormholes will have you predict, I had absolutely no choice or control but to investigate: Toilet bracket bolt caps. The things that cover what holds the toilet to the ground. As it turns out, there are options available. Whether this is needed, necessary, or even nice-looking—these are personal questions. I’m simply here to inform. So, here we go:
Ceramic Bolt Covers
Brass Bolt Covers
Additionally (not all brass, but nice + metal): Toto; Lavi Industries; JR Smith.
Aquatic Life
An entire category of toilet bolt covers includes a variety of ocean and water life. I’m unsure of the implication here—their habitat is where it’s all ultimately heading? Or just that this is a vessel containing some degree of water?
What’s your feeling on these, gentle reader? The standard covers do have a tendency to wander away, leaving corroded and rusty bolts visible… But, turtles? Brass? Colors? Would you? Ever?
And while you’re making a decision, either way, would you care to join me on Pinterest?
