New year, new thing I’m trying! This missive is interactive, I’m encouraging a little class participation.
New, new, new. That’s the feeling this time of year. Resolutions! But, I have a different idea. A different way to pose the question. And I’m wondering if a different question will prompt some different ideas. Instead of setting resolutions or goals or wild overhauls to your entire mode of being, what about this question…
What will you build this year?
You can take it as literally or figuratively as you like. “I will build a playhouse for my niece.” “I will build community among my first year students.” “I will build my credit score.” (Womp.) “I will build a reputation for being very awesome.” You get the idea.
So: Friends! Treehousians! What will you build? I’ll go first, but I’m doing so down in the comments… See you there. ✌️
To build this year:
1. I want to make a few of the Enzo chairs I wrote about a few months ago, in cedar, to live outside. Maybe mod it out to make a loveseat too... (link is here: https://treehouse.substack.com/p/if-i-can-build-a-chair-you-can-build)
2. Build STRENGTH. I hurt my back a few weeks ago, for the first time and now I know that back pain is terrible. Time to get super strong.
3. Community, here. Writing/editorial work can feel very one-way. I like the idea of being in conversation with you all. Hence, you know, this open threaded post.
1. a morning routine that actually gets me out of bed (because i feel better when I have time to myself in the morning, not because i “should”), because all i want to do is keep sleeping no matter how much sleep i got.
2. more trust in myself
3. a better relationship with my compulsions (i.e. noticing them, understanding them, and not feeling trapped by them)
4. my wardrobe in terms of accessories and extras that feel like me so i can have more fun and feel more like myself (and stop buying new sweaters and jeans just to feel something)
5. a hamburger
