To build this year:

1. I want to make a few of the Enzo chairs I wrote about a few months ago, in cedar, to live outside. Maybe mod it out to make a loveseat too... (link is here: https://treehouse.substack.com/p/if-i-can-build-a-chair-you-can-build)

2. Build STRENGTH. I hurt my back a few weeks ago, for the first time and now I know that back pain is terrible. Time to get super strong.

3. Community, here. Writing/editorial work can feel very one-way. I like the idea of being in conversation with you all. Hence, you know, this open threaded post.

1. a morning routine that actually gets me out of bed (because i feel better when I have time to myself in the morning, not because i “should”), because all i want to do is keep sleeping no matter how much sleep i got.

2. more trust in myself

3. a better relationship with my compulsions (i.e. noticing them, understanding them, and not feeling trapped by them)

4. my wardrobe in terms of accessories and extras that feel like me so i can have more fun and feel more like myself (and stop buying new sweaters and jeans just to feel something)

5. a hamburger

I’m building up my savings to buy a small electric kiln! I am putting my pocket change in an envelope (plus any coins I find in my car, under couch cushions etc.)

What a great way to frame it. I’d like to build:

1. The stockpile of meals in my freezer.

2. My pup’s confidence (and endurance for hiking, once she’s full grown).

3. New friendships.

4. A quilt for myself (I’ve given away every quilt I’ve ever made).

5. A writing routine.

6. A dog bed that isn’t ugly.

Freezer meals is the ultimate dream!

What's the dog bed plan?

Basically, big floor cushions. I’m deciding between a quilted cover, or faux shearling (since she likes fuzzy things), but maybe I’ll do both.

Ahh, yeah that makes sense. In my head it was a micro Donald Judd sofa because I automatically went carpentry! Yours sounds cozier.

Yours sounds way cooler and more impressive, though.

1. A literal treehouse for my tiny kiddo

2. A guest space, preferably with a small sauna on one end (for heating it, so practical!)

3. A more varied repertoire of weekday meals. Maybe boring, but looking for practical magic

4. Time for open ended space

We're designing a small cabin space and having many debates about the most efficient layout for the 'temporary' structure on skids to comply with code. A clawfoot tub for cold plunges is a part of the plan! I added in the sauna as a consolation prize for realizing a geodesic dome is probably not in our plan for cost and wear/tear. This would be our second cabin build after a house and barn, so we're happy to take our time and maybe enjoy the process more this time around. The dreaming and designing is one of my favorite parts.

My partner and I are verrry slowly building one of the chairs from Self Assembly -- almost as slowly as I’m currently building a kid in my body, lol. Besides these two I hope to build more coziness in my home, including a quilt for said kid! I usually make a lot of garments for myself, so I hope to put more of that energy into our space this year.

love this, zinzi! this year, I want to build something out of wood. I have a pipe dream of building a structure someday (to work or live in?) and I think a first step towards that will be just making *something* out of wood. there’s a great makerspace near me that offers a class to build an end table (for women, nonbinary & trans folks only) which feels like a comfy space to try it out :)

please share your enzo chair progress!

Yes, good idea. I have a tendency to just go all the way to the big idea first... not always advisable 🥴

I love that more places are offering women, nonbinary and trans specific classes, that’s great there’s a place near you. I have seen offerings at Yestermorrow, too.
