The Source: Fall Covet List From Our Favorite Portland Retailer
Katie’s back and she’s got a lot of good stuff to show us!
As owner of The Post Supply I often get asked some version of “how do you find this stuff” to which I reply - “I swear to you it finds me!” But the truth is, for as long as I can remember I have been a collector - not hoarder or obsessor - but excessively keen on treasures. Buzzy off useful solves for household issues. Euphoric over the perfect sweater for living in Maine or the just-right pant for life as a business owner and mom and owner of very long legs. I love beautifully made things. I love quality, durability, lasting-ness. I try to only fill my home, closet (and of course, store) with things I love to look at, that I use regularly, that function well, that makes life not only easier but more beautiful and inspiring. Sometimes this means I live without a rug or bathroom mirror or the ideal winter boot, for example - for months - and often - years. Sometimes it means I wear strait through my clothes which always feels especially satisfying. Often my budget doesn’t allow me to spring for the thing I want or need and so I need to practice a Buddhist level of patience and chill energy because of course I AM FINE WITHOUT IT. But then when you find that right piece - BAM, whole body vibrational energy and immediate life up-leveling. It’s worth the wait. So anyway, because I basically am always seeing things I want and love and can’t always buy them or simply don’t need them, I thought it would be fun to share them with you - Zinzi’s incredible following - because she and I see eye to eye on this stuff and so de facto, because of the rules of math, you will too, I hope. This list also represents SOME but certainly not ALL of my favorite small independent brands and shops because that is what I absolutely strive to live and die by when it comes to consumerism.
[From top to bottom, left to right…]
Let’s start with homewares and specifically some non-wood pieces. I read recently (I think in the FOR SCALE substack which I also highly recommend) that a room shouldn’t have something like more than 45% wood in it, which is basically unrealistic for me because my husband is a woodworker and I love antique wood pieces but I am VERY into the idea of a timeless shiny surface thrown into the mix to keep it interesting and not too wood on wood on wood. Enter: Stainless Steel Accents. Also yes I know stainless is #trending.
Our kettle still works ok but it is technically busted and so I have been eying one of these for a bit.
This feels like a really easy add on to any room and also *very functional*
We just onboarded this Amsterdam based artist & designer, Pien, and I am just head over heels for her entirely handmade approach and overall aesthetic- these are pricey but wait until you feel the weight of them - I cannot wait to place my morning coffee on one of these babies and gaze lovingly at it while also playing princesses with my 4 year old- so chic!
Harvest season is upon us and YES I CAN MAKE A WREATH but I simply don’t have the time right now and this one feels basically perfect.
I purchased a few of these for toy org and now I just need them everywhere in my home, office, and barn. The color options are absolutely perfect and so the choice feels debilitating but I will be growing my collection, also they fold down to near-flat for easy storing or moving. Ideal.
We are taking our time growing any kind of art collection, and so have a lot of white wall space to stare at on long Saturdays without plans, but I sprung for one of Lottie’s pieces last spring and it hangs above our dining table now and so I see it multiple times every day as I dine with our family or walk past it on my one million trips up and down the stairs a day and I love it so much and so maybe there’s another in our future or maybe someone else needs this for their wall and I can just enjoy mine.
I’ve been on a years-long shower curtain journey and this is one that I discovered on my travels and still haunts me with it’s beauty.1
I love cookbooks. I use cookbooks. I combine well-loved recipes from multiple different cookbooks to piece together favorite weekly meals. I brought this simple, easily-stored-when-not-in-use book rest into the store and as soon as we get a restock I am getting one for my kitchen.
We have chickens and thus a consistent flow of fresh eggs and thus a consistent flow of egg-based dishes. I would love to try this beauty out to see how it contributes to the mix.
I have had this tab open on my browser for legitimately six months and counting. I simply need to find the right spot for it but this will land in my home or maybe it will land in yours.
We’ve been using the same pilly, old blanket on our movie couch for like 10 years and while it is at maximum lived-in coziness I can’t help but tell myself it is time for something fresh - also we really need a new couch but I am dragging my feet on that so a blanket is an easier update.
Building on the egg story but now because of the endless flow of overflowing eggs, we also have overflowing egg storage situation (basically Jenga but pyramid style) and so this would be a well-used addition and maybe I’d put this one in my fridge and feel extra organized and cute in there.
One of my all time favorite garden purchases. So sturdy, can be left outside in all weather (I know because I am constantly forgetting it in the garden), useful for carrying hand-tools and gardening gloves down to your garden beds, and obviously ideal for harvesting (you can rinse the vegetables RIGHT IN IT (in case that wasn’t obvious). I love it. Also it’s made in Maine, so thats a fun bonus.
Let me preface this by saying this next one *is* wood BUT because of the pop of color I feel like it can live here - a classic design with endless uses! Squeeze in an extra pal at the table, move it as a side table while you search for the perfect permanent solution, let your kids use it as a step stool because no matter what you say they are going to get up to the top shelf of the pantry and sneak sweets. You get the idea.
I love a braided rug. I have one in our downstairs bath and it just warms my heart every time I step onto its durable and color-rich surface. Mine is an OG from L.L. Bean and I think I need another for my upstairs bath or stair landing and I saw these from a favorite shop and thought - cute!
I’ve waxed poetic about my kid’s art table before and I am sure I will again but the fact is if you want to have an endless stream of art projects by your kids - have an art table and also if you want to have an endless stream of supplies needing to be organized - have an art table for your kids. Anyway, this seems like a cute NON WOOD pop of color option for surface organization.
Ed’s note: Reader, name me a more Treehouse phrase than, “years long shower curtain journey” ! 🙃
